Though Afie Jurvanen was born into the cold climate of Toronto, ON, the songs he performs under his appropriately-titled musical alias of Bahamas project an easy breeze of warmth. You may already be familiar with Bahamas from his past albums Pink Strat (2009) and Barchords (2012), and the vibrating riffs of his hit song “Lost in the Light”. You may even have been lucky enough to catch him on tour performing along side the likes of Wilco, Robert Plant, and Feist.
Earlier this month Bahamas released his third studio effort, Bahamas is Afie, which as the title indicates has proven to be his most personal collection of songs to date. The 12-track album tears down the wall between artist and audience as it invites listeners to walk through Jurvanen’s intimate mental dwelling. The album art is a focused shot of an inscribed wedding ring belonging to Jurvanen’s wife, who undoubtedly inspired a great deal of the album’s lyrical content. Bahamas is Afie is a statement of Jurvanen’s artistic independence as a singer/songwriter, and it underwent more production than any of his prior albums to nail down the perfect sound.
Jurvanen spent the past two albums honing in on his personal musical style, which rings clear and consistent from the first to last track on Bahamas is Afie. His airy soft-folk melodies are accompanied by concise, emotion driven lyrics to create a complex yet approachable ambience for his listeners to ease into. The top singles from the album, “Stronger Than That” and “All The Time”, feature proclaimed guitar riffs and a melodic twang that is impossible not to hum along to. He slows his pace on “Like a Wind” and experiments with heavier bass lines and gentle guitar strokes.
You can find comfort in knowing that Bahamas will be taking to the roads for the next three months to perform and promote the album across North America and Europe. Listed below are all the Canadian stops on his international tour.
