Adult Alternative Album of the Year

Bahamas Brushfire*Universal     (WINNER)

This album was the only album I physically purchased in this Category,”Thanks Starbucks”.  Three songs on the album “Be My Witness”, “Caught Me Thinking” and “Lost In The Light  are nominated in the Songwriter of the Year category.

Bahamas “Alfie Jurvanen”  is in my opinion the winner in that category.  My favorite song off Barchords is “Lost In The Light”  You might recognize it from the Durex TV Commercial Campaign currently running in Canada.  The video

is very good.  Caught me thinking is easily my second favorite off the album.  the last video I will show you is not on the Barchords album but it is my favorite song by Bahamas, it’s called Hockey Teeth.

Kathleen Edwards MapleMusic*Universal

After Listening to the album I was quite impressed.  The Album has a good mix of tempo, and Kathleen’s voice is unbelievably beautiful.  My favorite song off the album is “Change The Sheets” and the video is great too.  I’m just waiting to hear this song on one of AMC’s shows in the near future.  Another great song off of the album is “Empty Threat”

This album has every chance to win the award but unfortunately I think it will come up short. You can hear more from Kathleen Edwards here

Royal Wood MapleMusic*Universal   “Considerable Mention”

We Were Born To Glory

We previously have talked about Royal Wood on the Blog, and couldn’t be happier that Royal is up for this nomination.  Like the Barr Brothers I think this album is flying under the radar.

The demographic this album is directed to is the people voting for the awards, so he does have a chance of pulling off an upset.  The single off the album “Not Giving up” is motivating and sounds great.

You can check out the video here  If you’re a fan of Paul McCartney you will love Royal Wood!  Here is the perfect example from GreenCouchSessions You can hear more from Royal Wood here

Serena Ryder Serenader Source*Universal

Unfairly, I’m a big fan of Serena Ryder’s music, and this was possibly my favorite album of hers.  Serena is Nominated for 2 Juno’s.  First for single of the year with “Stompa”  the single off of the album.

Here is the video for Stompa    Another one of my favorite songs off of the album is “What I Wouldn’t Do” here is the video

You can check out more music from Serena Ryder on her website

This album is the perfect example of why this is going to be the toughest Juno Award to win in 2013.

The Barr Brothers Secret City*Universal

The Barr Brothers

After listening to the album I was surprisingly impressed.  This album is flying under the radar with little publicity but I really enjoyed the album.

My favorite song off the album is “Beggar in the Morning” which happens to be the first song on the album.  The third song off the album is another great one, you can watch the video for ” Old Mythologies” here

This album is very good and has just as good of a chance as any other nominee in this category.  You can check out more from The Barr Brothers at their website here

Classically Classified!

Classified – Classified (2013).

I recently got my hands on a copy of Classified‘s new self-titled album!  I have been a fan of Classified since his 2005 release Boy-Cott-In the Industry, but I was a little disappointed with his last album, Handshakes and Middle Fingers. I had high expectations for this album–expectations that are not always met– but, good news: 2013’s Classified is awesome!

The first track “3 Foot Tall” is a great song to kick off the album.  It is classic Classified and reminds me of his older work. Like most of Classified’s music, there is a message within the lyrics, providing substance to the song.  This is a perfect example of what I love about Classified’s music.

Following that excellent opener, we have “That’s What I Do”, which is another great piece but with a different feel.  This one is more mellow that the rest of the album but it fits perfectly with the album.  Classified displays some of his best songwriting throughout this track.

The third track, “Inner Ninja” ft. David Myles, is easily one of the best songs on the album.  Check out the music video here:

“Anything Goes” ft. Skratch Bastid & Saukrates, the fifth track, is my personal favorite.  I’m a big fan of the Saxophone in the background and the chorus is really catchy.  Check out the video:

Altogether this is the best album from Classified to this date.  With the Juno Awards coming up in April, I expect to see Classified nominated for multiple awards.
