A-Z NXNE: A Short (and Long) Preview

The summer is pretty much here, and with it brings the music festival season. Earlier this year Canadian Content Machine gave you a rundown of Austin, Texas’ South by Southwest; now, we will do the same for Canada’s version of the multi-day music festival, North by Northeast. With its Toronto setting, NXNE will feature over 1000 artists through ten days –many of them Canadian acts. Notable headliners are Pusha T, St. Vincent, Juicy J, Spoon, Run the Jewels, Spirtualized, Sleigh Bells, and much, much more.

We have covered a few of the Canadian acts before–check out our pieces on Harlan Pepper, Mac DeMarco, and the Skye Sweetnam-fronted Sumo Cyco. Here are five picks for must-see Canadian acts at NXNE!

Joel Plaskett Emergency

 1.  Joel Plaskett Emergency

Where and When: Horseshoe Tavern, Saturday June 21 @ 11:30 PM

Out of Dartmouth, Nova Scotia, this act features longtime indie rocker Joel Plaskett, he of nearly forty years of age. With that age comes experience, as his many years in Thrush Hermit, his solo act, and most recent get-together The Emergency will certainly show Plaskett’s deft ways around a good tune.

2. Mac DeMarco

Where and When: The Opera House, Friday June 20 @ 11:00 PM; Yonge-Dundas Square, Saturday June 21 @ 7:30 PM

A bit of a favourite of ours, the sometimes-weird and always-lovable Mac DeMarco will bring his interpretation of lo-fi fun indie (fundie?) to Toronto. And if you miss him out at The Opera House, don’t fret–DeMarco is pulling double duty and will be playing again on the Saturday at Yonge-Dundas Square.

3. METZ

Where and When: Lee’s Palace, Saturday June 21 @ 12:00 AM

One of the better benefits of being a hometown band in Toronto? You don’t have to worry about travel when all the festivals roll around. METZ already played Canadian Music Week last month, and now are looking to add a spectacular NXNE performance to their résumé. Even if you aren’t at Lee’s Palace on Saturday night, you may hear this trio anyway, because they are loud. They don’t describe their live shows as a “pterodactyl mid-flight” for nothing, you know.

4. HSY

Where and When: Adelaide Hall, Thursday June 19 @ 11:00, The Great Hall, Saturday June 21 @ 3:20 PM

So, how do you pronounce HSY anyway? Is it like Hussy, or does it rhyme with a certain Korean superpower? Which is a comparison, by the way, that these ferocious punkers would not like to have been made. With two shows, HSY is certainly on a mission to grab as many ears as possible during NXNE, and then to utterly obliterate them.

THE-JERRY-CANS

The Jerry Cans.

5. The Jerry Cans

Where and When: Tranzac Club, Saturday June 21 @ 9:00 PM

This band caught our attention in a unique way, for they’re the first act we’ve ever heard of to hail from the newest capital of Canada–Iqaluit, Nunavut. And the distinctiveness of The Jerry Cans continues once you actually sit down and listen: a bit of country, a bit of reggae, and a bit of traditional Inuktitut and throat-singing. How does that sound for a live performance you have never encountered before? Give The Jerry Cans some appreciation, and check out their show at The Tranzac Club.

For full listings and schedule, check out the NXNE website. We also have an A-Z listing of all the Canadian bands playing right here!
